Charity Golf Day

We had our best-ever Charity Golf Day yesterday at Alnmouth Golf Club, Foxton, since the event was created back in 2010.

Betty Lucas - The Very First Admiral Nurse for North Northumberland

HospiceCare North Northumberland are delighted to announce that due to exciting developments in partnership with Dementia UK – the national charity providing specialist dementia support - they are now in the process of recruiting an Admiral Nurse to provide end of life/ specialist palliative care to the people of North Northumberland living with a diagnosis of Dementia.

Admiral Nurses are specialist dementia nurses who work with and support families and carers of people with dementia. Working collaboratively with other professionals, Admiral Nurses seek to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers. They use a range of interventions to help people live positively with the condition and develop skills to improve communication and maintain relationships.

Sue Gilbertson, HospiceCare Clinical Manager said “The Admiral Nurse will be appointed initially for a two year period. During that time the Admiral Nurse will be working in partnership with Dementia UK through Practice Development, Clinical Supervision, and Continuing Professional Development, to maintain excellent standards and specialist skills in dementia care, as well as being an integral member of our Hospice team providing palliative and end of life care.

This Admiral Nurse’s role will involve continuing the further development of the Hospice’s Dementia and End of Life Programme, a project which is currently being delivered into Care Homes across North Northumberland. We are absolutely delighted that we are now able to have an Admiral Nurse as part of our clinical team – the very first in North Northumberland.”

Julie Allen, Business Development Officer for the North East at Dementia UK, said, “We are delighted to be working in partnership with HospiceCare North Northumberland.

With Dementia UK’s rolling programme of professional and practice development, the newly appointed Admiral Nurse will be supported in enhancing end-of-life care to families affected by dementia”.

How you can support Dying Matters Awareness Week

Dying Matters Awareness Week is an unparalleled opportunity to place the importance of talking about dying, death and bereavement firmly on the national agenda.

Hold your own Dying Matters Awareness event

A Dying Matters Awareness Week event can be large, small or anywhere in-between. You could host a coffee morning in your home, place of work, or a meet-up in your local community space and yes, that could be your local pub!

During the week we would ask you to be encouraging your friends, family, work colleagues and neighbours to discuss what they want for the end of their lives with those close to them. You could also be encouraging people to take five simple steps to make their end of life experience better, both for them and for their loved ones. These are:

  • Write your will
  • Record your funeral wishes
  • Plan your future care and support
  • Consider registering as an organ donor
  • Tell your loved ones your wishes

Ideally, you will base any events you run around these actions. However, as long as what you're planning fits with Dying Matters' broad agenda - to positively change attitudes and behaviour around talking about and planning for death - we'll be happy.

Please get in touch with us if you would like support in organising an awareness event, want to talk through your ideas, or would like help designing a poster for your event.

National Volunteer Appreciation Day 2018

Volunteer Recognition Day is celebrated on April 20, 2018. It honors all volunteers who are working on behalf of others without being motivated by financial or material gain. You can celebrate Volunteer Recognition Day by thanking volunteers for their work, involving yourself in a volunteer activity or by donating to a volunteer group.

Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity and is intended to promote good or improve human quality of life. In return, this activity produces a feeling of self-worth and respect; however, there is no financial gain. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development, socialization, and fun!

We couldn't agree more...

Our volunteers saved HospiceCare over £100,000 last year in the hours they donated to support us! Huge thanks from the HospiceCare Team to all our fantastic volunteers - we couldn't do it without you! xx
