Hospice Happenings Issue 4

Kym is taking on 3 challenges for HospiceCare this year, the first was Druridge Bay Marathon on 17th April which she brilliantly completed in an amazing 4 Hours 55 mins, then she took on  Edinburgh Marathon on 29th May in 5 Hours 15mins and finally she will cool down with a half marathon – The Great North Run on 11th September.

Debbie started work at the Hospice in 2003 working mainly in day care and half a day a week in the lymphoedema clinic. The demand for the lymphoedema service grew and soon took up most of Debbie’s time. Recently she has become more involved with the Hospice at Home service, while still supporting and treating palliative patients who have swelling to any part of their body caused by illnesses, such as cancer.

On Monday the 2nd May 2016 the younger students ( aged 3- 11) form Longridge Towers School held a Fun Run in aid of HospiceCare North Northumberland.

108 children took part and Hospice Ted was invited along to run too. The children managed to complete their Fun Run with the sun coming out to say hello.

Over £700 has been raised allready and young student Charlotte wanted to share with you why they picked HospiceCare .

Charlotte was interviewed by one of our volunteers Catherine you can view the interview below.

ShiShi's London Marathon Challenge

Local District Nurse ShiShi Ord, ran the London Marathon on Sunday 24th April in an amazing 3 Hours 35 minutes for local Charity HospiceCare North Northumberland.
It was ShiShi’s 4th London marathon, and this year decided that she would run in memory of her Dad.
ShiShi wanted to share her story about why running for HospiceCare meant so much to her.

“My Dad, Graham, may have been a bit sceptical when I decided to do my first marathon, but after he realised I wasn't going to ruin my knees he became my second biggest supporter (the best supporter crown sits firmly on the head of Lorna Logan, and will take some shifting!).  He tackled each London marathon with his usual organised approach, planning weeks in advance where he should stand (even though I often spotted him before he saw me!), what time he should get there, which transport would be the best to use and how to get to the pub at the end the quickest!  He and my mum discovered a great viewing spot between miles 23 and 24, and we never missed each other there.

I had chosen two charities to fundraise for HospiceCare North Northumberland and Force Cancer Charity, both these charities have played a large part in my personal and professional lives at either end of the country, and I just wanted to give a little back to them both.

Zip Slide Tyne Bridge

10 people bravely took part in an exhilarating 230m long Zipwire Challenge off the iconic Tyne Bridge on Sunday 17th April, whilst raising funds for HospiceCare North Northumberland. The Zip Slide started from the Newcastle side of the bridge, travelling diagonally across the River Tyne for 230m before finishing at HMS Calliope on the Gateshead side of the river.

Local Alnwick girls Amy and Emma Anderson, said ‘When we got the Hospicecare newsletter informing us of the Zipwire ,we jumped at the chance to do it, as they are really great charity providing a lot of care and support for people in our community. We were really excited and nervous. Climbing the step ladder to get ono the Tyne bridge was pretty scary, the chap said “after three or pushed?” PUSHED please we said and then we were off down the Zip at a speed of 25mph – it was brilliant. We would definitely do it all again! We want to thank family and friends for all the support and helping us raise over £300 for the hospice. Still time to sponsor them at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Amy-Anderson4

Zoe Frais, a trustee at HospiceCare North Northumberland, also took part dressed as Wonderwoman said “ People have been really generous and I have managed to raise £630 The nursing team do such a wonderful job in our local communities but each year we face a relentess challenge of raising £400,000.  There is still time to sponsor Zoe at - https://www.justgiving.com/Zoe-Frais

A spectator-lined course covers 13.1 miles from Newcastle, across the iconic Tyne Bridge and onto the picturesque coastal finish in South Shields.

The Great North Run is firmly established as the world’s most popular half-marathon. From just 5,000 runners at the very first staging in 1981, the event has now grown to an unmissable experience for over 54,000 each year.

The Great North Run is not only part of the culture in the North East, but has touched lives across the UK and around the world - with runners from over 40 different countries taking part.

Most runners choose to raise money for charities close to their hearts. Thank you very much for choosing HospiceCare North Northumberland.

Here are some thoughts from our previous runners -

"I just wanted to say a quick BIG thank you for putting on such a good "recovery tent" after the GNR. The lunch packs, sweets, cups of tea, massage and fantastic atmosphere really made it a very special day. Thanks again, see you next year......."

"Thanks again for yesterday the support and tent was fab!"

"Even though it was really tough, it was a privilege to be able to give back something to the hospice. Knowing that every penny raised will help other families provided real motivation to carry on! What a day!"
